My name is Marisa and my understanding of the SEND system comes from both my professional background and lived experience as the parent of three neurodivergent children.

Over the past several years, I have navigated EHCP assessments, annual reviews, specialist school consultations, emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA), school-related trauma, alternative provision, elective home education, personal budgets, mediation, tribunal processes, and Education Otherwise Than At School (EOTAS).

Two of my children spent extended periods out of education due to unmet needs and school-related distress. Through this, I have experienced first-hand the challenges of securing appropriate support, understanding SEND law and guidance, gathering evidence, communicating with professionals, and making difficult decisions in my children's best interests.

I am also neurodivergent, with ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyscalculia. I understand how overwhelming the SEND journey can be when balancing your own needs, caring responsibilities, and the emotional impact of advocating for your child.

My family's experiences have given me a deep understanding of both the practical and emotional challenges families face, and the importance of clear information, realistic guidance, and compassionate, judgement-free support.

Combined with my professional knowledge and IPSEA SEND law training, this enables me to support families with empathy, understanding, and practical guidance through what can often feel like an overwhelming system.
